National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day

October is filled with several holidays and one that stands out is National Take Your Parents To Lunch Day. Spending quality time with parents is important and food is typically the main attraction. When it comes to choosing a place to eat, be sure that menu items are safe for your party. Consider browsing the menu on the web prior to reserving a table.

As our parents grow older, food choices might be limited due to specific health conditions. Also, parents may not disclose dietary restrictions or health issues with loved ones. Heart disease is a leading cause of death for many Americans, and parents are often prescribed heart medications and heart-friendly diets. Some parents might be taking a blood thinner and limit or avoid foods that have vitamin K, or follow a low-sodium diet to control blood pressure.

Other food-related considerations for your parent may include keeping track of fluid intake that could be risky with kidney disease or congestive heart failure health issues. On the other hand, cold drinks might be bothersome for older folks, and asking the waiter for light-ice for your mother or fathers beverage could be greatly appreciated. Other factors related to food texture can include difficulty chewing cuts of meats like beef, chicken, or pork, with a new set of dentures. Ordering the fish might be a good alternative. Keep in mind that older people might also need to avoid drinking alcohol.

Food restrictions or special diets have been recommended for years and do positively contribute to quality of life for many. Paying attention to what’s-on-the-menu before and during your dining with a parent, can help create a safe and enjoyable eating experience with your loved ones.

Till next time, stay healthy and be well.
